Celebrating Shreveport Black History Icons – Roy Griggs

Roy Griggs was born in Meridian, Mississippi. He began his career with McDonald’s following his graduation from Southeast High School, in 1971. He now owns several McDonald’s in the Shreveport-Bossier and east Texas areas.

Mr. Griggs has won many awards and received numerous recognitions, including 1981 Outstanding Young Man in America, 1996 nomination as Citizen of the Year in Alabama, and Greater Shreveport Chamber of Commerce Minority Business of the Year Award in 1998.


Mr. Griggs’ past affiliations include Board of Directors of Boys and Girls Club of America,
Advisory Board for area schools, Tourism Board of Shreveport-Bossier, Co-Op President for
the local McDonald’s Owners in Shreveport-Texarkana, as well as city and county industrial
boards.

Among other offices, he has served as Vice Chair of Minority, Women and Small Business
of Greater Shreveport Chamber of Commerce, Caddo District Chairman and Vice Chair of
Membership for Boy Scouts of America (BSA). He also served as Norwela Council BSA
Finance Chair for the Scoutreach Program, The Committee of 100, Hal Sutton Foundation,
The Independence Bowl Foundation, King 5 of the Krewe of Harambee, Shreveport-Bossier
African American Chamber of Commerce, and local and national McDonald’s Black
Owner/Operator Association.

Roy Griggs and his wife, Nelva, reside in Shreveport and are active members of The
Stonewall Baptist Church in Bossier City. They have four children, Delano, Michael, Tony
and Luchina, as well as several grandchildren.
